This was a first for both Evan and myself. Taking the smelly stuff out of a skunk. Skunk essence is used for lure while trapping. It's something that will get most animals' attention and they like to come investigate when they catch a whiff.
You can find skunk lure pretty much anywhere online. Although, since it's trapping season, the pure essence("pure quill") is hard to find this time of year because of the high demand. So on to plan B, just squeeze it out all by yourself!! :)) There are easier, less messy ways to do this. Evan's Lieutenant got his out with a needle. We didn't have a needle and we don't live near stores so......medical gloves and some good strong squeezes will do the trick!
One of the cutest pictures I've ever seen!!! Annoyed that he takes the best pictures when he's holding a dead animal. |
plain Vaseline |
Taking the creature to the other side of the yard.... |
I was SOOOO terrified that it was going to squirt on me. But we soon found out that this was just poop. LOL |
Oh and there it is!!! Squirting right out just like a bottle of French's mustard after it's been sitting in the cupboard for a couple of months!! Yummy!!!! |
Those two little ninnies are the glands. |
And there's some more!!! |
It was a small skunk so we didn't get a lot. |
Then we dumped the essence into the melted Vaseline and gave it a good stir. Voila! Fisher and Marten Call Lure!
Wow!!! I never realized that was used for hunting! This may be a studpid question, but did it stink really bad while you were doing it??? It must have been difficult trying to do that if it did! This must be on a list of thingsyou thought you'd never do, lol!!
ReplyDeleteIt didn't smell at all as long as I was upwind of it. At one point I walked in the wrong direction and it was POTENT. It didn't even really smell like a skunk usually smells....it was SO strong. This is so disgusting but I felt the smell went in my mouth and it tasted like 10 raw garlic cloves. It was nasty.
DeleteYou two are quite the team!! I am gagging here just thinking about it lol...I love the look on Evan's face in that first shot....hope he catches lots of animals with the lure!! Thanks for sharing...I will think of this every time I see a skunk...keep up the great work on your blog!
ReplyDelete..disgusting! This is a new level of excitement in the North Woods! Anonymous...it's the only way I can figure out how to post. Stephanie :)

DeleteI, too, get to have the great skunk lure smell around my home in Princeton. It's the fun of living with someone that is a Maine Guide and Trapper. It never fails when we have a gathering of friends and family, that some newbie asks, "I think you have a skunk under your barn...I just nod my head and smile.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness well I'm glad I'm not alone!!! Evan has been using my vehicle for trapping and I think I'm used to the smell a little bit now...but I'm afraid to have anyone else ride with me!! :))
